Every eleven years, since the middle of the 19th century, Paris has held Universal Expositions. In 1889, the event coincided with the centennial of the French Revolution. That year the commissioners selected Gustave's Eiffel tower instead of its plans for a 300-meter-tall guillotine. There was a huge array of exhibits, making it one of the most successful exhibits ever held. This is a print taken at that event.
